Find out more About Bowen Therapy

The Technique of Bowen Therapy

The Bowen technique is quite unique to the field of body work. It triggers the body's own healing resources to achieve balance and harmony, which can result in lasting relief from pain and discomfort. Benefits may be seen after the first session and may be long lasting.

It is a dynamic soft tissue therapy that is gentle and effective. The work consists of a sequence of precise moves on specific points of the body. Important “pauses” are incorporated to allow the body to integrate the messages stimulated through the Bowen moves.

Bowen promotes deep relaxation and self healing. It is safe to use on anyone, in all age groups. It is truly a holistic therapy that addresses the body as a whole and acts not only at the level of structural and functional systems but also at the level of the individual's overall well-being. This encompasses body, mind and spirit.

The Bowen Technique allows the body to heal itself without forceful intervention. It can be used to enhance the effectiveness of other modalities. However, its effectiveness, appears to be reduced by other modalities. It is recommended that no other therapies be performed for 4 days before or after a Bowen treatment.

In many cases, the recipient can expect substantial relief after the initial session. It is recommended that a client schedule a second appointment to reinforce the work. In the case of repeated injury or chronic illness it may take longer to effect a permanent cure, but you will experience improvement gradually.

Once a client’s initial complaint has ceased, it is generally the case of “Let’s see how you make out.” You may be great for 4 weeks or 4 years. You will know when you need your next treatment…. that is another unique quality of Bowen Therapy. Maintenance is as unique as the individual!

Bowen In Practice

On The Day of Treatment

  • ⁃ The Bowen Technique is best practiced directly on the skin. Appropriate underclothing should be worn. You will be professionally draped throughout your session. A practitioner may work through light, loose fitting clothing, if that is more preferable to the client. It is important, to have you comfortable, throughout your session.

⁃ Your practitioner will take a health history in order to select the ideal procedures to be used that day. Generally, we treat the body as whole and restore the body’s balance, in the initial visit.

⁃ You will start your session on the massage table in a prone position, without the face cradle. Modifications can be made to ensure comfort. You will be turned supine, on your back, for the remainder of the procedures.

⁃ Bowen sessions can take anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes, with pauses in between. The pause, where the practitioner leaves the room, may be between 2 to 5 minutes.

⁃ After a series of moves, the practitioner will leave the room for the pause. This is an integral part of Bowen Therapy. It allows the body time to integrate the information it has just received from the moves, and allows the body to adjust accordingly.

⁃ You may feel sensations like, flowing heat or tingling, between moves. It is important to communicate this to the practitioner upon their return to the room. We will allow extra time for the body to continue its response. You may, however, feel nothing at all, either case is normal.

⁃ In contrast to other hands on modalities, where a practitioner imposes correction on the client through the technique , Bowen allows the body to heal itself, with minimal intervention.

⁃ At the end of your session, your practitioner will give you a few words of advice. These are not meant to impede on normal activity. The basic suggestions are to drink some distilled water, a light exercise such as walking/swimming, and finally, simply to wait, allowing your body time to respond before engaging in any other modality.

⁃ Due to the subtlety of Bowenwork and your body’s continuing response to it, other forms of manipulative therapy performed up to 4 days before, or 5 days after your Bowtech session, may interfere with its effectiveness.

⁃ It is suggested that the work be reinforced in 7 to 10 days.

⁃ Many feel relief in the first session, however, more chronic issues will take a few more sessions. When our bodies compensate for our chronic problem, generally speaking, other issues are created, and will need to be resolved as well.
